Alan Kay, datalog,sedan år1970 verksam vid Xerox PARC, utvecklade programspråket Smalltalk.Alan Kay minns sin första tid som doktorand:
"[...] Head whirling, I found my desk. On it was a pile of tapes andlistings, and a note: This is the ALGOL for the 1108. It doesntwork. Please make it work. The latest graduate student gets thelatest dirty task.
The documentation was incomprehensible. Supposedly, this was theCase-Western Reserve 1107 ALGOL - but it had been doctored to make alanguage called Simula; the documentation read like Norwegiantransliterated into English, which in fact was what it was. There wereuses of words like _activity_ and _process_ that didnt seem tocoincide with normal English usage.
Finally, another graduate student and I unrolled the listing 80 feetdown the hall and crawled over it yelling discoveries to eachother. [...]"
